Résumé:
Commentaire: A cop tries to catch drug dealers and avenge the death of his partner. He seems more interested in the latter, though, and always on the edge of having a meltdown, displaying an ominous calm or gleeful exuberance before exploding in a rage. Its a shock when a gun finally appears late in the film because the cop's weapon of choice up until then has been a baseball bat, which he has no problem using even to interrogate women. Going into dangerous situations and trying to make arrests without his gun drawn, he seems not only ineffectual but reckless to the point of having a death wish. He gets suspended for excessive use of force, but he's quickly back at it and its unclear if we're supposed to be sympathetic to his tantrums and vicious beatings because he's perceived to be a loser by his colleagues or that a drug dealer he's seeking vengeance on happens to be protected by higher-ranking cops exploiting him for the greater good. But the cop does plenty of exploiting of his own, collecting money for and mercilessly using a low-level dealer to further his own ends and reveling in the power he wields over him and his ability to crush his hope and spirit--in other words, to make him as miserable as the cop himself. What is clear is the vast majority of the film is repetitive violence, cruelty, animalistic impulse, and the gleeful enjoyment of it. Any brief moments of humanity seem inserted just to have something to corrupt or tear apart. The plot is threadbare, uninsightful, and barely enough to hold your interest and I had the urge to turn the film off when a cigarette was put out in someone's eye. I should've gone with it.
