Résumé: A family scandal causes a wealthy and powerful Mexican rancher to make the pronouncement--'Bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia!' Two of the bounty-hunters thus dispatched encounter a local piano-player in their hunt for information. The piano-player does a little investigating on his own and finds out that his girlfriend knows of Garcia's death and last resting place. Thinking that he can make some easy money and gain financial security for he and his (now) fiancée, they set off on this goal. Of course, this quest only brings him untold misery, in the form of trademark Peckinpah violence.
Commentaire: Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia(1974) along with Cross of Iron(1977) are the best films from the late period of Sam Peckinpah. It deals with greed, human nature, and survival instincts. It is hypnotic in its nature, forceful in its narrative, and violent in its outcome. Its about a rich man who puts a price on a man's head. The film is a road movie about the search for a personal El Dorado.

BMTHOAG is filled with scenes of powerful and symbolic meaning. The landscape of the movie is pure Peckinpah. There are a couple of scenes which impress me the most. One is a scene where Benny discusses his plans with his girlfriend, and another is when he talks to the head of Alfredo Garcia. The movie has a gothic touch to an already morbid surrounding.

Warren Oates gives a terrific performance as Benny, a down and out piano player who's looking for the big payoff. Isela Vega is both erotic and exotic as Elita, the long suffering girlfriend of Benny. Their relationship is doomed and tragic. Some people have said that Benny is the alter ego of Sam Peckinpah with his mannerism and characteristics. Violence is a way of life to the people that inhabit the film as they get used to the violent air around them.

The direction by Sam Peckinpah is great and the story is very gritty. Sam Peckinpah showed in this movie that he wasn't just a director of fast paced action but high emotional drama as well. This comes on the heels on his last Western Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid(1973). BMTHOAG was the director's only shot of a Film Noir. If The Wild Bunch(1969) was about the death of loyalty in the group structure then this is about the death of the individual person.

Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia(1974) shares a lot in common with John Huston's The Treasure of the Sierra Madre(1948). In fact, it could be considered a remake or even an updated version of that John Huston masterpiece. One thing it shares is the self destructive nature of the main protagonists. The ending of the film is an unusually grim and depressing one for a Peckinaph movie. This should be seen together with Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid as they share similar themes and would make a great double feature at any second hand movie theatre.
